Opening disclaimer – I am a huge Superman fan and like almost every movie that has been made.
This movie feels faithful to the comics. It is bright. Fun.
Overall, the plot was decent. It got us from the beginning to the end without fumbling the MacGuffin – which has been a challenge for a lot of superhero movies lately. So, that’s a bright point. Overall, I found myself more drawn to the characters and how the actors brought them to life. The entire cast was hitting it out of the park.
Although, Nicholas Hoult stole the show and ran down the street with it cackling.
His Lex Luthor was the best I have ever seen. Live action, animated, or in the comics. I loved every minute of his screen time. He was this perfect combination or smarmy superiority and lunatic that made his version of Lex seem like someone who would really blow up the world to get his own way.
The second stand out performance for me was Rachel Brosnahan. She made Lois Lane her own and portrayed a hard, tough as nails, veteran reporter with miles of attitude and street smarts. I loved it. Every minute.
The visual effects were top shelf. The fights were clean and clear. I never found myself lost in space or time – wondering what was happening or how people were teleporting around. That is no mean feat – a lot of movies just throw you into this weird place where the laws of physics cease to exist and it generates a strange dissociation as you watch. This movie always felt grounded even with people flying around and fighting kaiju.
Last note – Krypto is the bestest boy!
